ERP projects are business transformation projects

Let’s be direct about something some software vendors don’t always say upfront…at least not in the early stages of engagement.

An ERP implementation is not an IT project. It’s a business transformation project — and the distinction matters enormously.

The system is the easy part. The hard part is you.

Here’s what I mean. When you implement an ERP, you are not just installing software. You are documenting how your business actually works, deciding how it should work, and then committing to operating that way – consistently, across every department, every shift, every transaction.

That requires things technology cannot provide:

• → Leadership that sets the direction and holds it
• → Process owners who take accountability, not just access
• → A willingness to change how things have “always been done”
• → Honest conversations about where the real inefficiencies live

The businesses that struggle with ERP implementations almost never fail because the software didn’t work. They fail because the organization wasn’t ready to change – or wasn’t given permission to.  So what should you expect from yourself in this process?

Expect discomfort. Mapping your processes to a structured system will expose gaps, workarounds, and decisions that have been avoided for years. That’s the point.

Expect investment beyond the licence fee. Training, change management, internal project resource, and executive time are not optional extras — they are the project.

Expect to make decisions. An ERP forces clarity. You will need to standardise what has been informal, and choose where flexibility is genuinely needed versus where it has just been tolerated.

Expect resistance. Not because your people are difficult, but because change is hard and uncertainty is uncomfortable. Your job is to lead through it, not around it.

Expect it to take longer than the original timeline. Build that expectation in from day one – not as an excuse, but as a realistic foundation for trust with your team.

The organisations that get the most from their ERP are the ones who treated the implementation as a once-in-a-decade opportunity to get their house in order — not a software rollout to get through.

The technology is ready when you are.
